Digipak Analysis

This is a presentation showing the three digipaks I analysed.

Album Advert Mood Board

This is a mood board to help with ideas as to how my album advert cover will look. They all consist of a gothic sort of feel, which matches the concept of our music video and they all belong to the genre of indie.

Album Advert Analysis

Here are three album advert covers that I have analysed. Two belong to the genre of indie, which applies to the music video that we are making and another belongs to the genre pop.

The name of the band is ‘Friendly Fires’ with it also being the title of their album. The name consists of alliteration and is also oxymoronic. The effect alliteration has is that it makes it catchier and also easier to remember. The name is also an oxymoron as you wouldn’t associate friendliness with fires. While friendly fire carries the meaning of shooting at a team mate, ‘Friendly Fires’ implies more towards an actual fire and its differentiated characteristics. It may suggest to the viewer how the band is quite wild and eccentric, but tamed enough to be sociable with others. The font is very thin, however, varying in size. The name of the band/album is the biggest in size as it is what is meant to catch the eye the most. Below it is a quote from an established organisation to help promote the band. These fonts, being at the top of the album advert are in white so that it stands out in the sky. For the piece of text at the bottom, it is in black in order to be seen clearly against the beach. The dominant image within the front cover is of the three band members relaxing on the beach in what seems to be a luxurious tropical island. This suggests more towards their hedonistic way of life in living a life of enjoyment and fun. The band members are positioned equally in reference to the rule of thirds, signalling their equality, however, you would imagine that the guy in the middle was the main star in the band as he is viewed as the centre of the group. The star on the left seems to be looking down at his book and reading, indicating how he may be intellectual, but also more to himself and not having a care for much around him. The star in the middle is seen to be looking into the distance almost in awe, or appreciation. The star on the right is the only member of the band who is looking directly into the camera, and so, the only one trying to establish a connection with the audience. This may indicate his confidence as a person, and the fact that he is reaching for an alcoholic drink may also suggest towards his party side. The band fits into the genre of indie rock. This is established through the setting and also the outfits. They are dressed in smart casual, but stylish clothing and sitting along a beautiful beach. The target audience for this album advert are indie fans as it is difficult for this album advert to attract people of different genres as not much is given away. Additionally, it is aimed more towards females given the posture of the three men and scenery.

The name of this artist is ‘Lana Del Ray’ with the album being called ‘Born To Die’. Her name is the biggest and most bold piece of text on the cover as it is aimed to be what the audience sees first when looking at the cover. The title of the album shares the name of the biggest song on the album and is very powerful. The text helps keep the house style consistent as it is of white and blue colour, matching the image. The dominant image of the cover is Lana herself in the centre of what seems to be quite a peaceful and relaxing environment, suggesting focus and serenity. The artist is posed with seemingly great and firm posture, standing upright and stiff with the camera angle being a mid- shot. She is dressed in white, suggesting innocence and purity which completely goes against the stereotypical portrayal of females in the music industry who are usually portrayed as sex symbols. In reference to her facial expressions, there are none, almost making her seem broken or without emotion. This idea is reinforced by the title of the album. ‘Born To Die’ isn’t necessarily the most positive of messages and illustrates how the artist may be one that is conflicted and facing some sort of inner turmoil. The artist fits into the genre of indie alternative. This is through her following conventions that do not apply to conventional values of other genres of today. She is a very attractive woman, yet she isn’t portrayed in a sexual manner as most other female artists are. Additionally, the message behind her album title and facial expression is one that can be interpreted in many ways. The target audience for this album is females. If the artist was made to look more seductive then they would be targeting males.

The name of the artist is ‘Katy Perry’. She is one of the most recognised figures within the music industry and her name connotes the impression of a young, wild, and eccentric girl. It is also quite a catchy name, and not the name given to her at birth. Her real name is Katherine Hudson, and you can see clearly the different effect the two names have. While her real name gives the impression of a normal and more mature individual, her stage name sounds more conventional in reference to the genre of pop. The font is best described as feminine and playful, with it having the look of blow up balloons and being of pink colour, consisting of various flicks. The title of the album is ‘Teenage Dream’ with the idea of the dream being believed to consist of dancing, love, lust, and running away. The design of the font is also in a sort of bubbly form and has the look of candy canes as it is in red and white stripes. The dominant image within the front cover is the artist fully naked while laying down on a bed of candy floss looking clouds. Through this, she is portrayed as a sexual object and made to appear seductive and enticing. She is staring right at the audience as if to try and establish a connection and she is posed with her feet pointing up but breasts covered, teasing the audience. Katy Perry fits into the genre of pop which is understood through the colours and conventions of the album advert cover. She is presented as a sexual object and the most prominent colour is pink. The target audience for this advert are pop fans. It also successfully attracts males as she is presented in a provocative manner.

Music Video (Second Draft)

This is the second draft for our music video. We have developed from the first in reference to the feedback we received. This is not the final draft as we still need to re-shoot the band scenes and implement the portrait of Dorian Gray.
