Initial Focus Group

Here is a video of our initial focus group, where we got a group of three other media students within our target audience to listen to the song we are making a music video for, asking them a few questions to gain feedback on our ideas. We were able to gain a better understanding of how our ideas would go down to the audience viewing our music video.

Final Music Video Synopsis

This is the plan for what I feel will be happening in the music video broken down to each section of the song:

INTRO (0:00 – 0:38)
-          5-10 seconds of the “Dorian Grey” Painting (slow zoom in on the painting)
-          Short takes of the band preparing to perform (long shot, medium shot of each performer)
-          When the drums part begins, we see the band perform (short takes, wide shot)
-          Equilibrium starts: We see the guy waking up and everything is peaceful. (medium shot, long shot)

1ST VERSE (0:39 - 0:59)
-          Main protagonist wakes up, we see his bloodshut eyes, (he’s obviously haven’t had any sleep) [close up shot, disfigured and hand held camera to show disorientation]
-          Goes into the bathroom, bathroom is worn out [eye line match]
-          Washes his face and looks into the mirror, he frowns then washes his face again [over the shoulder shot, showing the mirror, close up of his face]
-          He walks out of the bathroom and looks at the window and see the street [eyeline match, high angle shot]
-          Short takes of the band performing [close up shot of the vocalist; limited source of lighting]

PRE CHORUS (0:59 – 1:19)
-          We see guy walking down a street full people, confused. (Medium shot to close up shot, eye line match of his hands)
-          Everything is in fast motion while main protagonist is in real time.
-          Short takes of band performing
-          Then a short take of the painting a bit older

CHORUS (1:20 – 1:41)
-          We see someone running to him, grabs his arm and it is revealed to be the love interest (a close up to hand, a medium shot to long shot of the back of the girl, medium shot of the girl’s face)
-          Everything is in normal time again
-          Short takes of the band performing (long shot, wide shot, medium shot and close up shots)
-          Close up of their hands as the girl squeezes his hand and walks away
-          Painting becomes a bit older again

2nd VERSE (1:41 – 2:02)
-          Close up of the main protagonist being disoriented (shown through hand held camera); he starts breaking and throwing stuff in the bathroom and the room (bird’s eye view shot, medium shot, long shot)
-          The girl comes in and tries to calm him down
-          Short takes of the band performing
-          The painting becomes older

PRE CHORUS (2:03 – 2:22)
-          Continuation of what happens in Verse 2
-          We see him with a chains (symbolism)
-          Before the chorus starts, we see him breaking the mirror in slow motion

CHORUS (2:23 – 2:45)
-          We see him running in the cemetery (disorientation – shown through hand held camera and panning)
-          Close up and medium shots of him, confused and in pain
-          Short takes of the band performing (aggressive performance)
-          The painting becomes older and older

ADLIB (2:45 – 3:27)
-          He is going to be running in the cemetery, then present his transformation
-          High angle shot in an ellipsis to show his vulnerability and disorientations
-          Panning of his movements
-          We see all the takes from before, it is revealed that he doesn’t see his reflection in the mirror which is why he goes on rampage
-          Shots of the band performing
-          The painting becomes older again

CHORUS (3:28 – 3:49)
-          We see the girl running towards him.
-          He asks her to stay away but the girl cautiously approach him
-          She pats his shoulders, he pulls her aggressively and hugs her tightly
-          Girl is anxious but tries to comfort him and hugs him tighter
-          The main protagonist bites her neck and blood gushes out (This part of the song should exactly be in the “A monster, A monster, I’ve turned into a monster”)
-          Short takes of the band performing
-          A lot of medium and close up shots, extreme close up shots of the eyes
-          Shallow focus

OUTRO (3:50 – 4:14)
-          The main protagonist lays her down the grassy area, we see his eyes filled with regret, he cries
-          Short takes of the band performing
-          Painting becomes disfigured and unrecognisable

-          Last few seconds a close up of the girl’s eyes, she opens them and reveals her vampire eyes

Mood Board For My Music Video

For my mood board, I have included anything that I feel will be of inspiration in relation to the genre and ideas behind my chosen song and the direction I wish to be heading towards in its' filming. The mood board includes the newest version of Dracula, the Twilight saga, Gothic settings, a cemetery at both day time and night, Imagine Dragons on stage performing, another indie music video that demonstrates a sense of lust between a male and female, and an image from the book Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
